In the first of a series of cases that will follow Pfizer's controversial Viagra-maker's failed attempt to market a generic version of the drug, a panel of physicians recently approved the first generic version of the pill.

In 2009, a panel of doctors voted to approve Viagra in the United States, and then another panel of doctors voted to approve Viagra in Europe in 2010. The FDA had already rejected the drug in Europe before. The drug, also called sildenafil citrate, had an estimated market value of $5.6 billion, according to the FDA.
The FDA has not approved Viagra or its generic equivalent, but has approved a number of other drugs to treat impotence. But in June, it said it had rejected a request from Pfizer to make a generic version of the drug. The drug had a price tag of more than $2 billion, according to the FDA.
